Verdict and score

Bithumb is one of South Korea’s major crypto exchanges, and in October 2026 it is the place where PAX Gold actually trades against the Korean won. Upbit lists PAXG only against BTC and USDT. Coinone and Korbit showed PAXG/KRW pairs with zero volume. That leaves Bithumb as the practical choice for a Korean resident who wants a gold token bought from a won balance.

We give Bithumb 6.5 out of 10 for buying and holding PAXG. It scores well on regulation, because Korean exchanges with KRW markets must report to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit and bank through real-name accounts. It scores lower on fees and usability, because its fee pages did not load for our check and the service is built around Korean residents. The PAXG book is also thin. If you are new to the token, read what PAX Gold is first.

The PAXG/KRW market on Bithumb

On 12 October 2026, CoinGecko and CoinPaprika both listed an active PAXG/KRW market on Bithumb, with roughly US$6,800 of volume over 24 hours. Bithumb’s own API blocked requests from our research environment, so we rely on the aggregators. Korean outlet Blockmedia also reported the KRW-market listing on a 21 March date. The article snippet did not show the year, and we could not confirm it, so we do not give a listing date.

US$6,800 a day is not much. PAXG traded at about US$4,170 that day, so the daily turnover was under two ounces. That is enough for small purchases, but a larger order could move the price. Global PAXG/USDT books are much deeper. Our PAXG trading guide explains how to read order-book depth before you place a big order.

Kimchi premium risk

South Korea has a well-known habit of local prices running ahead of global ones. It happens in gold too. The KRX Gold Market, launched in 2014, saw a record 37.3 tonnes traded in the first half of 2025, with 46.9% of it by retail investors. According to JoongAng Daily, the “gold kimchi premium” over international prices went above 20% in February 2025 and was about 18.6% to 20.5% in October 2025, prompting warnings from the exchange.

PAXG/KRW on Bithumb is also priced by Korean demand, not directly by the London market. The real-name account system and the closed KRW market make it harder for traders to close a gap quickly. So the won price of PAXG can sit above, or below, the dollar price multiplied by the exchange rate. Our PAXG vs gold comparison looks at how the token compares with KRX gold and physical bars.

Fees

We tried to read Bithumb’s fee pages on 12 October 2026. One timed out and another returned only a page title, because the content loads by script. We therefore cannot confirm Bithumb’s trading fee for the KRW market, any coupon discounts, or the PAXG withdrawal fee. Check all three in the app before your first order.

For a long-term PAXG holder, the trading fee is usually a smaller cost than the local premium. A fee of a few tenths of a percent matters less than buying 3% or 5% above fair value. Note too that Paxos charges no on-chain transfer fee on PAXG today; any cost of moving tokens out is the exchange’s withdrawal fee. Our guide to PAXG fees and redemption covers what Paxos charges directly.

Real-name accounts and KRW deposits

Korean law requires exchanges that run won markets to bank through a real-name account partnership. For you, that means two things. You must pass identity checks with Bithumb, and you must hold an account in your own name at the bank Bithumb works with. Only then can you move won in and out. If you cannot open such an account, the KRW market is effectively closed to you.

Withdrawing PAXG to your own wallet is possible for supported networks, but check the network carefully. The official Ethereum contract is 0x45804880De22913dAFE09f4980848ECE6EcbAf78. Solana has been an official PAXG network since 25 June 2026, but Paxos has not published a mint address we could verify. Send a small test amount first. Our wallet guide explains self-custody options.

Regulation and safety

Korean exchanges must report to KoFIU under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information, and Bithumb operates as a reported VASP. The Virtual Asset User Protection Act, in force since July 2024, adds rules on segregating customer deposits, cold-storage ratios and market abuse. A second-stage Digital Asset Basic Act was still pending in the National Assembly in 2026, with a dispute over who may issue won stablecoins.

On security, we did not re-verify Bithumb’s incident history for this review, so we do not list past events or dates. Our security score reflects that uncertainty rather than a known problem. The Korean deposit-segregation rules are a real plus for users. The token itself carries separate risks: Paxos can freeze addresses and upgrade the contract. See is PAX Gold safe for those.

  1. Sign up and verify

  2. Link a real-name bank account

Tax is unsettled. A 22% tax (20% plus local tax) on virtual-asset gains above KRW 2.5 million a year is scheduled for 1 January 2027. As of late September 2026, the ruling party was backing another delay and opposition bills proposed 2029, 2030 or repeal, while the government said it would proceed. This is not tax advice; follow the National Tax Service.

Alternatives

Inside Korea, Upbit offers PAXG only against BTC and USDT, and its USDT pair is very quiet. Global exchanges have deeper PAXG/USDT books, but check whether they are reported to KoFIU before using them from Korea. CEX.IO, in business since 2013, is not registered with Korea’s FIU and restricts some coins for Korean users; whether PAXG is among them is not stated.

Questions people ask

Does Bithumb list PAX Gold?

Yes. CoinGecko and CoinPaprika both showed a live PAXG/KRW market on Bithumb on 12 October 2026, with about US$6,800 of volume over 24 hours. Korean outlet Blockmedia also reported the KRW-market listing.

Can I buy PAXG with won on Upbit?

No. Upbit’s own API showed only BTC-PAXG and USDT-PAXG markets on 12 October 2026, and the USDT-PAXG pair last traded on 28 September 2026. Bithumb is the venue with an active PAXG/KRW market.

What do I need to deposit won on Bithumb?

Korean rules require exchanges that run KRW markets to work with a partner bank on real-name accounts. In practice you need identity verification and a bank account in your own name at the bank Bithumb works with before you can deposit won.

Is PAXG on Bithumb more expensive than the global price?

It can be. PAXG/KRW is priced by Korean supply and demand, so it can carry its own premium or discount, much like the gold kimchi premium seen on the KRX Gold Market in 2025. Compare the won price with the dollar price times the exchange rate before buying.

How is PAXG taxed in South Korea?

A 22% tax on virtual-asset gains above KRW 2.5 million a year is scheduled for 1 January 2027, but as of 12 October 2026 further delays were under debate. Treat the start date as undecided and check with the National Tax Service.
