PAXG in Korea at a glance
PAX Gold (PAXG) is a token from Paxos Trust Company, N.A., a US national trust bank supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Each token represents one fine troy ounce of a London Good Delivery bar stored in LBMA vaults in London. Korean residents have a local won market for it, which many countries lack. The catch is size. On 12 October 2026 the PAXG/KRW book on Bithumb handled roughly US$6,800 of trading in 24 hours, which is small for an asset worth over four thousand dollars a token.
So the Korean question is less “can I buy it?” and more “at what price compared with gold elsewhere?” Korea has a long record of local premiums, in bitcoin and, more recently, in physical gold itself. This page walks through the rules, the exchanges, that premium, the 2027 tax and the units Korean buyers think in. For the basics of the token, see what PAX Gold is.
FSC, KoFIU and the Virtual Asset User Protection Act
Start with the law. Korean virtual asset service providers must report to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (KoFIU) under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information. An exchange that wants to offer won markets also needs a real-name bank account partnership: your exchange account is tied to a verified bank account in your own name, and won moves only between the two. This is why only a handful of Korean exchanges run KRW books at all.
The second layer is the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, in force since 19 July 2024. It requires exchanges to keep customer deposits separate from company money, to hold a set share of customer coins in cold storage, and it sets rules against market abuse such as price manipulation. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) sets policy and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) carries out supervision. A broader second-stage law, the Digital Asset Basic Act, is still pending in the National Assembly. Around ten digital asset and stablecoin bills are in play, and the main dispute is over who may issue won stablecoins.
The third layer is exchange practice. Even with these rules in place, each exchange decides which tokens to list and against which currency. That is how PAXG ended up with a KRW market on one exchange, crypto-only markets on another, and dormant pairs on two more.
Where PAXG trades for won
We checked every major Korean exchange on 12 October 2026. Two have PAXG markets we could confirm. Bithumb lists PAXG/KRW; its own API blocked our request, but CoinGecko and CoinPaprika both showed a live ticker, and a Blockmedia report covers the KRW-market listing on 21 March at a reference price of ₩4,482,000 (the year was not shown in the snippet we saw). Upbit’s own API lists BTC-PAXG and USDT-PAXG but no won pair, and the USDT market’s most recent trade was on 28 September 2026.
| Exchange | PAXG pairs | What we found | Official site |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIBithumb | PAXG/KRW | The only active PAXG/KRW book we found; about US$6.8k traded in 24h on 12 Oct 2026 | bithumb.com |
| UPUpbit | PAXG/BTCPAXG/USDT | No won pair; USDT-PAXG last traded 28 Sep 2026 | upbit.com |
Two more exchanges show a PAXG/KRW pair on CoinPaprika with zero volume, and neither appears on CoinGecko. We could not reach their own APIs, so treat these as dormant rather than tradable.
| Exchange | PAXG status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Coinone | PAXG/KRW at 0 volume | CoinPaprika only; own API blocked |
| Korbit | PAXG/KRW at 0 volume | CoinPaprika; CoinGecko now names the venue “Digital X” |
| GOPAX | No PAXG market | CoinGecko |

The gold kimchi premium and why it matters for PAXG
Koreans already know the “kimchi premium” from bitcoin, when local prices run above global ones because won cannot flow freely in and out of crypto. In 2025 the same effect showed up in physical gold. The KRX Gold Market, launched in 2014, traded a record 37.3 tonnes in the first half of 2025, with retail investors behind 46.9% of it. Demand was strong enough that the KRX gold price ran more than 20% above international prices in February 2025 and about 18.6% to 20.5% above them in October 2025, and KRX issued warnings to investors.
Why does this matter for a token? Because PAXG/KRW on Bithumb is priced by Korean crypto supply and demand, not by Paxos. Globally, PAXG has stayed close to spot gold: across 470 daily observations, its median gap was +0.08% and 97.7% of days fell within one percent. A small, closed won book has no such guarantee. If Korean demand for gold spikes again, the PAXG/KRW price can carry its own premium, and you would be paying it on top of gold. The fix is simple: before you buy, compare the Bithumb price with the international price on our live PAXG price page, converted at the current won rate.
PAXG on Bithumb vs KRX gold
For a Korean saver, the realistic alternative to PAXG is not a London vault but the KRX Gold Market. The comparison below sticks to what we could verify. For the broader question of token versus metal, read PAXG versus physical gold.

Neither option escapes local pricing entirely. The difference is that PAXG gives you an exit: if the won price looks rich, you can buy on a global PAXG/USDT book and hold the same token. That is also where an offshore exchange comes in, with the legal caveats we cover in the next section.
Buying PAXG as a Korean resident
Open a real-name account
Sign up on Bithumb and link a bank account in your own name, which the exchange needs before it accepts won.
Deposit won
Transfer KRW from the linked account. Check the deposit and withdrawal fee page before you start.
Compare the price
Convert the international PAXG price into won and compare it with the Bithumb ask. A gap of several percent is a reason to wait.
Place a limit order
Buy PAXG/KRW with a limit price. Partial fills are normal on a thin book.
Decide where to keep it
Leave it on the exchange for easy selling, or withdraw to a wallet on Ethereum. See our PAXG wallet guide first.
Some Korean buyers use foreign exchanges for the deeper PAXG/USDT books listed on our exchanges page. That route needs care. Korean rules expect VASPs serving Korean residents to report to KoFIU, and many foreign platforms have not. CEX.IO, a long-running exchange in business since 2013 with US money-transmitter licences, is one example: it accepts users in Korea under its Nevis entity, CEX OVRS LLC, but it is not registered with KoFIU, and its help center says some cryptocurrencies are unavailable to South Korean users. Whether PAXG is among them is not stated, so check before you deposit.

Converting PAXG to don
Korean jewelers and gold shops price in don (돈), with one don equal to 3.75 grams; a traditional gift ring is often one don. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so one PAXG is a little over eight don. The table gives quick conversions, and our gold calculator does the same with live won prices.
| Amount | Grams | Don | PAXG |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 don | 3.75 | 1 | 0.1206 |
| 10 don | 37.5 | 10 | 1.2057 |
| 1 PAXG | 31.1035 | 8.294 | 1 |
| 0.5 PAXG | 15.552 | 4.147 | 0.5 |
Fixed definitions: 1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g; 1 don = 3.75 g.
A worked example: on 12 October 2026, CoinGecko’s aggregate won price for one PAXG was about ₩5,558,542. Divide by 8.294 and one don’s worth of PAXG came to roughly ₩670,000 that day, before any local premium. If Bithumb’s ask were 3% higher, the same don would cost about ₩20,000 more.
The 2027 crypto tax
This is general information, not tax advice. Korea’s virtual-asset income tax is scheduled to start on 1 January 2027, after several deferrals. The rate is 22%, made of 20% national tax plus local tax, on yearly gains above KRW 2.5 million. As an illustration with assumed numbers, a resident who realizes ₩5 million of crypto gains in 2027 would be taxed on ₩2.5 million, for ₩550,000.
The date is not settled. In late September 2026 the ruling party joined calls for another delay, and opposition bills propose 2029, 2030 or outright repeal, according to the Korea Times. The government’s stated position is to proceed in 2027. Either way, keep your Bithumb trade history and any wallet transfers now, because cost basis is far easier to prove at the time than years later.
Risks specific to Korea
The first risk is price. A thin won book can trade far from fair value, and a large market order will walk up the asks. The second is search confusion: 팍스골드 and 테더골드 are often treated as the same thing, but they have different issuers, vaults and reports, which our PAXG vs Tether Gold comparison lays out. The third is fake tokens. If you withdraw PAXG, verify the Ethereum contract on our networks page, because any token can call itself PAXG.
Finally, remember the issuer-level risks that apply everywhere. Paxos can freeze tokens under its terms, redemption into dollars needs a verified Paxos account, and physical delivery starts at about 430 ounces in London. None of that is unique to Korea, but a Korean holder with a won-only exit should know where the gold really sits. Our safety guide covers those points, and the country overview shows how Korea compares with other markets.
Questions people ask
Can I buy PAX Gold with Korean won?
Yes, on Bithumb, which runs a PAXG/KRW market according to CoinGecko and CoinPaprika data from 12 October 2026. The book is small, at roughly US$6,800 of trading in 24 hours on that day, so use limit orders. Coinone and Korbit show PAXG/KRW pairs with zero volume.
Is 팍스골드 available on Upbit?
Upbit lists PAXG only against BTC and USDT, not against won, according to its own market API on 12 October 2026. Both markets are very thin; the USDT-PAXG pair’s most recent trade was on 28 September 2026.
What is the difference between 팍스골드 and 테더골드?
PAX Gold is issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A. under OCC supervision, with gold in London and monthly KPMG attestations. Tether Gold (XAUT) is issued by TG Commodities in El Salvador, with gold in Switzerland and quarterly reports. Both represent one troy ounce per token.
Why is the PAXG price in won different from the global price?
The PAXG/KRW price on Bithumb is set by Korean buyers and sellers on that exchange, so it can trade at a premium or discount to the international price. Korean gold has shown the same effect: the KRX gold price sat about 18.6 to 20.5 percent above international prices in October 2025.
Will PAXG gains be taxed in Korea?
A 22 percent tax, 20 percent plus local tax, on annual virtual-asset gains above KRW 2.5 million is scheduled for 1 January 2027. As of 12 October 2026 another delay is being debated, so the start date is not settled.
How many don is one PAXG?
One PAXG is one troy ounce, or 31.1035 grams. One don is 3.75 grams, so one PAXG equals about 8.29 don.
