How to buy PAX Gold in Brazil with reais

Brazilians can buy PAX Gold directly in reais on Foxbit and Mercado Bitcoin, both running PAXG/BRL markets in October 2026. Exchanges now fall under Banco Central rules, and sales up to R$35,000 a month on domestic platforms are tax-exempt.

The short answer

Yes, you can buy PAX Gold (PAXG) in Brazil, and unlike in much of the world you can do it directly in reais. On 12 October 2026 we confirmed a PAXG/BRL market on Foxbit through the exchange’s own API, and on Mercado Bitcoin through two market-data aggregators. Each token represents one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold held by Paxos Trust Company, N.A., so a fraction such as 0.01 PAXG gives you a hundredth of an ounce.

The setting has changed a lot this year. Exchanges are now supervised by the Banco Central do Brasil under rules in force since 2 February 2026. The tax picture stayed stable after a proposed reform lapsed. The live price card above shows PAXG in reais; the full chart lives on our PAX Gold price page.

Banco Central rules and the CVM

It helps to separate what the law says, what the regulators do and what exchanges actually offer.

The law. Law 14.478/2022, the Marco Legal dos Criptoativos, created the legal category of virtual-asset service providers and gave the executive branch the power to pick a supervisor. That supervisor is the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB). The Comissão de Valores Mobiliários (CVM) keeps its role over tokens that qualify as securities. In our reading, PAXG is a commodity-backed token rather than an investment contract, so for a buyer the relevant supervisor is the BCB, which oversees the exchange you use.

The regulator. The BCB published Resolutions 519, 520 and 521 on 10 November 2025, and they took effect on 2 February 2026. Resolution 519 sets the authorisation process. Resolution 520 covers how SPSAVs (sociedades prestadoras de serviços de ativos virtuais) are set up and run, in three classes: intermediária, custodiante and corretora. Resolution 521 treats certain virtual-asset activities as foreign-exchange and international-capital operations, which matters for cross-border transfers.

Exchange practice. Firms that were already operating have 270 days from 2 February 2026 to apply. By our count that ends around 30 October 2026, so the deadline falls a few weeks after this guide was written. Resolution 548 gives the BCB up to three years to decide on applications from operating firms, and press reports put minimum capital at roughly R$10.8 million to R$37.2 million depending on activity. We found no public BCB list of granted SPSAV authorisations as of 12 October 2026. In plain terms: Foxbit and Mercado Bitcoin are operating legally during the transition, but neither has a confirmed final authorisation that we could see.

PAXG/BRL exchanges

Brazil is one of only a handful of countries where PAXG trades against the local currency on more than one exchange. Both books are thin, though. Mercado Bitcoin’s PAXG/BRL market showed about $4,000 of volume over 24 hours on CoinGecko on 12 October 2026. Foxbit does not appear on CoinGecko for PAXG, so we have no volume figure for it, only proof that the market exists.

Foxbit lists PAXG/BRL in its public API, which also returned default fees of 0.25% for makers and 0.50% for takers on 12 October 2026. A taker order is one that fills immediately against the book; a maker order waits as a limit order. Our Foxbit review looks at the order book and deposit options.

Mercado Bitcoin is a long-standing Brazilian exchange. Its own API blocked our automated check, but both CoinGecko and CoinPaprika showed a live PAXG/BRL ticker. Fees vary by account type; see the exchange’s fee page and our Mercado Bitcoin review.

Binance serves Brazil but has no PAXG/BRL pair. You would buy USDT with reais and then PAXG/USDT, paying two spreads. NovaDAX may list PAXG, but neither its API nor the aggregators confirmed it. Our exchanges overview lists global venues.

Funding with Pix and reais

The big practical advantage of a Brazilian exchange is the funding rail. Brazilian platforms generally let you top up a BRL balance by Pix from your own bank account, which is far faster and cheaper than an international card payment. Check the deposit page of your exchange for the exact limits and any fee, as we did not verify them for each venue.

Use an account in your own name and CPF. Exchanges reject third-party transfers, and mismatched names can freeze a deposit for days. Global exchanges usually cannot accept Pix directly, so you would pay by card or buy USDT first. CEX.IO, for example, a US-licensed exchange in business since 2013 that serves Brazil through its Nevis entity, CEX OVRS LLC (which holds no regulator licence), lists PAXG/USDT but offers no BRL or Pix funding. For a reais-first buyer, that makes the domestic route simpler.

Tax: the R$35,000 exemption

This is general information, not tax advice. Check current rules with Receita Federal or a contador.

The headline rule for individuals is the monthly sales exemption. If the total value of your crypto sales on Brazilian exchanges in a calendar month is R$35,000 or less, the capital gain is exempt. Note that the limit is on sales value, not on profit. Above that amount, the whole month’s gain is taxed at progressive rates from 15% to 22.5%. Crypto held on foreign exchanges follows Law 14.754/2023: 15% a year on gains, with no monthly exemption.

In 2025 the government tried to change this. Provisional Measure 1.303/2025 proposed a flat 17.5% rate and the end of the exemption. It lapsed without becoming law, so the prior regime still applies to domestic sales as of October 2026.

Worked example (illustrative). You sell R$30,000 of PAXG on Foxbit in March with a R$4,000 gain: under the limit, no tax. In June you sell R$40,000 with a R$5,000 gain: above the limit, so 15% of R$5,000, or R$750, is due. Spreading sales across months can keep you inside the exemption, but all your crypto sales in the month count together.

Gold as a hedge in Brazil

Brazilians have good reasons to think about the dollar. The real has lived through long stretches of inflation and sharp swings against the US currency. Gold is priced globally in dollars, so a Brazilian holding gold gets two exposures at once: the gold price and the BRL/USD rate. When the real weakens, the reais value of gold tends to rise even if gold itself is flat.

The country’s central bank has been adding gold too. According to the World Gold Council, the BCB bought 43 tonnes in 2025, the third-largest amount of any central bank after Poland and Kazakhstan. For households, gold has traditionally been a niche asset reached through gold sold by DTVMs, B3 gold contracts and gold funds. We have not found reliable figures for retail demand.

Token or bar?

A gold bar or B3 contract keeps you inside traditional finance. PAXG gives you a claim on allocated London gold that you can hold in your own wallet and sell at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. Our PAXG vs physical gold guide compares the two.

Is it safe, is it worth it?

Two questions Brazilians search most are “pax gold é seguro” and “pax gold vale a pena”. On safety: the issuer, Paxos Trust Company, N.A., has been a national trust bank under the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) since 12 December 2025, and KPMG LLP attests the gold reserves every month. The real risks are elsewhere: Paxos can freeze tokens, and your exchange could fail or block withdrawals. We go through them in is PAX Gold safe.

On whether it is worth it: PAXG does not try to beat gold. It is gold, minus a little convenience cost on the way in and out, and it pays no interest. If you want a hedge against the real and like the idea of owning a fraction of an ounce, it does the job. If you want growth, it is the wrong tool. Our price prediction page summarises what analysts expect for gold, without promises.

Step by step for residents

This is the flow on a Brazilian exchange. For general order types and wallets, see our how-to-buy guide.

  1. Pick a PAXG/BRL exchange

Foxbit or Mercado Bitcoin. Read our reviews and check that the platform has filed for BCB authorisation.

  2. Verify with your CPF

Upload ID and confirm your address. Use the same name as on your bank account.

  3. Deposit reais by Pix

Send from your own account. Check limits and fees on the deposit page.

  4. Place a limit order on PAXG/BRL

Compare the ask with the live price in reais above. A limit order also gets you the lower maker fee on Foxbit.

  5. Decide where to keep it

Leave it on the exchange if you plan to sell soon, or withdraw to a wallet you control on Ethereum.

  6. Track your monthly sales

Log each sale so you know whether you stayed under R$35,000 that month.

Local risks

Before you buy PAXG in Brazil

  • Check that the exchange is operating under the BCB transition and has applied for authorisation.
  • Compare the PAXG/BRL ask with spot gold in reais; thin books can drift.
  • Use the official Ethereum contract when withdrawing; see PAXG networks.
  • Ignore “PAXG staking” promises with high fixed yields; PAXG has no native yield.
  • Keep statements for Receita, including sales on foreign platforms.

A common scam pattern uses gold or “gold-backed” branding to sell schemes with fixed monthly returns. Real PAXG is an ERC-20 token at a published contract address, not an app that promises monthly returns. If someone offers to “manage” your PAXG for a fixed yield, walk away. For more context on how PAXG compares with its main rival, see PAXG vs XAUT, and for other markets visit the countries hub.

Finally, watch the regulatory calendar. If an exchange misses the authorisation deadline or is refused, it may have to wind down its Brazilian business. Follow your exchange’s official announcements and the BCB virtual assets page in the weeks around the end of October 2026.

Questions people ask

Where can I buy PAX Gold with reais?

On 12 October 2026 two Brazilian exchanges ran a PAXG/BRL market: Foxbit, confirmed through its own API, and Mercado Bitcoin, confirmed through CoinGecko and CoinPaprika. Binance offers Brazilian users PAXG/USDT only, with no BRL pair.

Is PAX Gold safe for Brazilians?

The token is issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A., a US national trust bank supervised by the OCC, and is backed one-to-one by allocated gold in London with monthly KPMG attestations. The main local risks are the exchange you use and the thin PAXG/BRL order books, not the gold itself.

Do I pay tax when I sell PAXG in Brazil?

If your total crypto sales on Brazilian exchanges stay at or below R$35,000 in a calendar month, the gain is exempt under the current rules. Above that, gains are taxed progressively from 15% to 22.5%. Crypto held on foreign exchanges falls under Law 14.754/2023 at 15% a year with no monthly exemption.

Did MP 1.303 end the R$35,000 exemption?

No. Provisional Measure 1.303/2025 proposed a flat 17.5% rate and the end of the exemption, but it lapsed without becoming law. The earlier regime therefore still applies to individuals selling on domestic exchanges.

Is PAX Gold worth it as an investment?

It depends on why you want gold. PAXG tracks the dollar gold price, so in reais it also moves with the exchange rate, which some Brazilians want as a hedge. It pays no interest, so it suits savers who want gold exposure, not income.
