The short answer for Taiwan
PAX Gold (PAXG) is a token issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A. One PAXG represents one fine troy ounce of a London Good Delivery gold bar held in LBMA vaults in London. If you live in Taiwan, you can own it, but you cannot buy it for New Taiwan dollars on a domestic exchange. We checked the two largest local venues on 12 October 2026 and found no PAXG/TWD pair on either.
That gap shapes everything else on this page. The usual route is a two-step one: TWD becomes USDT on a local platform, and USDT becomes PAXG on a global exchange with a real order book. Each hop adds a fee, a spread and a transfer, so the order of operations matters more here than in countries with a local gold-token market. If you are new to the token itself, start with what PAX Gold is and how it works, then come back.
FSC rules today and the licensing law that is coming
Three layers are worth keeping apart: what the law says, what the regulator does, and what exchanges actually offer. On the law side, Taiwan’s virtual asset service providers (VASPs) have been required to register with the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) under the Money Laundering Control Act since 30 November 2024. This is an anti-money-laundering registration. It checks who runs the platform and how it screens customers. It is not a licence that vets the products listed or guarantees your deposits.
On the regulator side, the FSC published its first list of registered providers on 22 September 2025, with nine firms on it; reports say eight remain registered now. MaiCoin group’s 現代財富科技, the company behind the MAX exchange, is on that list. We could not confirm BitoPro’s registration status in this research pass, so check the FSC site yourself before you deposit. Both BitoPro and MaiCoin were each fined NT$1.5 million earlier for AML violations, which tells you the FSC does enforce the regime.
The bigger change is the Virtual Asset Service Act, which passed the Legislative Yuan on 30 June 2026. It creates an FSC licensing regime with seven categories of VASP and requires approval from both the Central Bank and the FSC for anyone issuing stablecoins. The effective date had not been confirmed when we checked; commentary points to around early 2027. Until then, the registration regime is what applies. A domestic VASP-to-VASP Travel Rule phase was also planned for October 2026, so expect more questions about where transfers go.
- AML registration becomes mandatory
VASPs must register with the FSC under the Money Laundering Control Act.
- First FSC register published
Nine firms listed, including the operator of MAX.
- Virtual Asset Service Act passes
Seven licence categories; stablecoin issuance needs Central Bank and FSC approval.
- Domestic Travel Rule phase (planned)
VASP-to-VASP transfer data sharing inside Taiwan.
- Licensing could take effect
Effective date not confirmed as of 12 Oct 2026.
Why there is no PAXG/TWD pair
We looked for a domestic market in three places. BitoPro’s own public API lists 19 TWD trading pairs and its currency list contains no PAXG at all, so the answer there is a clear no. MAX blocked our automated request, but CoinGecko’s page for the exchange shows no PAXG market, so we treat it as “no, unverified.” ACE (王牌) could not be checked either way. Aggregators sometimes miss markets, so a fresh listing is always possible, but as of 12 October 2026 nothing was verifiable.
Why would a local exchange skip a gold token? Demand for gold in Taiwan already has a comfortable home in bank passbooks and listed ETFs, and a thin local PAXG book would mostly mirror the price on global venues anyway. Whatever the reason, the practical effect is simple. A Taiwanese buyer has no single-step route, and anyone who promises one should explain exactly which venue and which pair they mean.
Global exchanges Taiwanese buyers use for PAXG
Once you hold USDT, the question becomes where the PAXG/USDT book is deepest. The table below lists global venues whose PAXG markets we confirmed through their own APIs on 12 October 2026. Our full PAXG exchange list adds more detail on liquidity and proof of reserves. These are foreign platforms, and our research did not confirm an FSC registration for any of them. Check the FSC register for a venue before you rely on it, and treat an unregistered foreign exchange as a risk you are choosing to take, not a footnote.
| Exchange | PAXG pairs | Why Taiwanese buyers look at it | Official site |
|---|---|---|---|
| CECEX.IO | PAXG/USDTPAXG/USDPAXG/EURPAXG/USDC | Card purchases; liquidity mainly in PAXG/USDT | cex.io |
| BIBinance | PAXG/USDTPAXG/USDCPAXG/BTCPAXG/TRY | Deepest PAXG/USDT book; also PAXG/BTC | binance.com |
| OKOKX | PAXG/USDT | PAXG/USDT spot | okx.com |
| KRKraken | PAXG/USDPAXG/EURPAXG/BTCPAXG/ETH | USD and EUR pairs; no USDT pair | kraken.com |
| KUKuCoin | PAXG/USDTPAXG/BTC | PAXG/USDT and PAXG/BTC | kucoin.com |
CEX.IO is one long-running option on that list. It has been in business since 2013, and its US entity is registered with FinCEN and licensed as a money transmitter in 38 states plus DC. Users in Taiwan contract with CEX OVRS LLC in Nevis, which holds no regulator licence, and CEX.IO shows no FSC registration and no TWD funding. Its practical advantage is that you can pay by card or Apple Pay and skip the local USDT step, at the cost of card fees that can be far higher than a bank transfer.
Prefer a card to a two-hop transfer?
Buy PAXG directly with a Visa or Mastercard and move it to your own wallet afterwards. Compare the card fee with the TWD-to-USDT route first.
Getting from TWD to USDT and back
The on-ramp is where Taiwanese buyers can stay inside a registered system. Local platforms such as MAX and BitoPro offer TWD bank deposits and USDT/TWD markets. You buy USDT there, withdraw it to the global exchange, and buy PAXG. The off-ramp works in reverse: sell PAXG for USDT abroad, send the USDT back, and sell it for TWD at home. Every leg leaves a record, which you will want when it is time to work out your gains.
Two details trip people up. First, USDT exists on several networks, and the deposit address on the receiving exchange must match the network you choose when withdrawing. Second, the price of USDT in TWD on a local book can drift away from the official exchange rate when demand spikes. On 12 October 2026 the reference USD/TWD rate was about 31.96. If your local USDT price sits well above that, part of your “gold” purchase is really a stablecoin premium.
Here is a worked example with assumed numbers. Say you want 0.1 PAXG. You buy USDT on a local platform with a 0.2% fee, pay a fixed network withdrawal fee, then buy PAXG/USDT on a global exchange with a 0.1% taker fee. On a purchase worth about US$417, the trading fees come to under US$1.50, and the network fee is usually the larger cost. On a card purchase, the same 0.1 PAXG with a 3% card fee would cost about US$12.50 extra. Our general buying guide walks through payment methods in more depth.
How a Taiwan resident buys PAXG, step by step
Check the register
Open the FSC website and confirm that the local platform you will use for TWD is on the VASP register. Do this before you link your bank account.
Buy USDT with TWD
Deposit TWD by bank transfer, buy USDT on the USDT/TWD book, and compare the price with the official exchange rate.
Send USDT to a global exchange
Pick one network on both sides and send a small test amount first. Wait for it to arrive before sending the rest.
Buy PAXG/USDT
Use a limit order on the PAXG/USDT book. Compare the price with spot gold on our live PAXG price page to spot unusual premiums.
Withdraw to your own wallet
Withdraw on Ethereum to an address you control and verify the token contract on our networks page. Paxos’s bar lookup only works for self-custodied addresses.
Gold passbooks, ETFs and where PAXG fits
Taiwanese households have long held gold, and the most common modern form is the bank gold passbook, 黃金存摺. Bank of Taiwan is the best-known provider. You buy and sell gold in grams through your bank, and the balance sits in your account in the bank’s books. Taiwan Stock Exchange-listed gold ETFs are the other mainstream route. We did not research current passbook spreads or ETF fees for this page, so we will not quote numbers for them.
PAXG differs in a few concrete ways. It trades every hour of every day, including Lunar New Year holidays when banks close. You can move it to a hardware wallet and look up the serial number of the bar allocated to your address on Paxos’s site. The trade-offs are real too. Paxos can freeze or wipe tokens under its terms, redemption into dollars requires a verified Paxos account, and physical delivery starts at about 430 ounces and happens only in London. A passbook keeps you inside Taiwan’s banking system; PAXG takes you outside it. For a fuller side-by-side, read PAXG versus physical gold.
Gold gifting at Lunar New Year
Gold is a classic gift around 春節. A token can be sent to a relative’s wallet in minutes, but the recipient then needs to know how to store it and how to sell it. For a first-time holder, a gram-based passbook or a physical piece may be the kinder gift; PAXG suits someone who already uses a crypto wallet.
Many Taiwanese searches also compare PAXG with Tether Gold (paxg xaut). The two differ on issuer, vault location and attestation frequency: Paxos stores gold in London and publishes monthly KPMG attestations, while XAUT’s gold sits in Switzerland with quarterly reports. Our PAXG vs XAUT comparison covers that in detail.
台錢 and 台兩 conversions
Taiwanese gold shops quote in 台錢 and 台兩, not in troy ounces. One 台錢 is 3.75 grams and one 台兩 is ten 台錢, or 37.5 grams. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so a PAXG token is a little smaller than one 台兩. The table shows the conversions; our gold calculator does the same sums with live prices in TWD.
| Amount | Grams | 台錢 | 台兩 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 PAXG (1 troy oz) | 31.1035 | 8.294 | 0.829 |
| 0.1 PAXG | 3.110 | 0.829 | 0.083 |
| 1 台錢 | 3.75 | 1 | 0.1 |
| 1 台兩 | 37.5 | 10 | 1 |
| 1.2057 PAXG | 37.5 | 10 | 1 |
Fixed unit definitions: 1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g; 1 台錢 = 3.75 g; 1 台兩 = 37.5 g.
A quick sense check: a one-台錢 gold gift is roughly 0.12 PAXG. On 12 October 2026, CoinGecko’s aggregate price for one PAXG was about NT$133,153, which puts a 台錢 of PAXG near NT$16,000 on that day. Prices move, so use the live ticker at the top of this page for today’s figure.
Tax basics in Taiwan
This is general information, not tax advice. Taiwan has no tax statute written specifically for crypto-assets. Commentary we reviewed says gains are generally treated as property-transaction income under the Income Tax Act and taxed at the progressive rates of 5% to 40%. Gains made on overseas platforms may also fall under the Income Basic Tax Act, the alternative minimum tax, when overseas income exceeds NT$1 million. Our sources disagree on the exact AMT exemption threshold, so we do not quote one.
The honest summary is that your treatment depends on how your income is classified and where it was earned. Keep a record of every TWD-to-USDT purchase, every USDT-to-PAXG trade and every sale back to TWD, with dates and amounts. Then ask the National Taxation Bureau under the Ministry of Finance, or a licensed accountant, how those records should be reported.
Local risks and scams to watch
Taiwan has seen plenty of investment fraud that borrows the language of gold and crypto. Fake “gold token” platforms promise fixed monthly returns, and chat-group “teachers” steer people to apps that are not on any register. PAXG pays no yield of its own, so any product that promises guaranteed interest on it is lending your tokens to someone. Our PAXG safety guide covers the issuer-side risks; the checklist below covers the local ones.
Before you send money
- The TWD platform appears on the FSC VASP register.
- The PAXG contract matches the one Paxos publishes on Ethereum.
- You sent a small test transfer first, on the same network on both sides.
- Nobody is promising a fixed return on PAXG.
- You saved every trade confirmation for your tax records.
- You know how you would sell back to TWD if you needed cash quickly.
Finally, remember the regulatory clock. When the Virtual Asset Service Act takes effect, foreign exchanges may face new requirements to serve Taiwanese users, and the set of platforms open to you could change. Check back on this page and on our country overview for updates.
Questions people ask
Can I buy PAX Gold with Taiwan dollars?
Not directly on a Taiwanese exchange as of 12 October 2026. BitoPro’s own API lists no PAXG market and CoinGecko shows none on MAX. Most buyers convert TWD to USDT on a local platform and then buy PAXG/USDT on a global exchange.
Is PAXG legal in Taiwan?
Holding and trading crypto-assets is legal in Taiwan. Platforms serving the public must be registered with the Financial Supervisory Commission for anti-money-laundering purposes, and the Virtual Asset Service Act passed on 30 June 2026 will add a full licensing regime once it takes effect.
What is PAXG 幣 and how is it different from a bank gold passbook?
PAXG is a token issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A., where each token represents one fine troy ounce of a London Good Delivery bar. A bank gold passbook (黃金存摺) is a gold account kept by a Taiwanese bank in its own books. The token can be moved to a private wallet and trades around the clock, while the passbook stays inside the banking system.
How many 台兩 is one PAXG?
One PAXG is one troy ounce, or 31.1035 grams. With one 台兩 at 37.5 grams, that equals about 0.829 台兩, or about 8.29 台錢.
Do I pay tax on PAXG gains in Taiwan?
Taiwan has no crypto-specific tax statute. Gains are generally treated as property-transaction income under the Income Tax Act, and gains on overseas platforms may also matter for the Income Basic Tax Act. Check your own case with the National Taxation Bureau, because the classification depends on your circumstances.
